Banks and Insurance Companies
The banking and insurance sector is developing in Burundi. Six commercial banks and five insurance companies share the local market which is not fully occupied. A 1999 Law authorises the opening of free bureau de change.
Because of crisis the currency was devaluated: before the war One US Dollar equalled to 100Fbu ( Burundi francs); today one US Dollar equals to 1057 Burundi Francs on official rate. The people live in misery.
