1. INTRODUCTION OF THE DISASTER AND LOCATION AFFECTED.

DETAILS OF THE EMERGENCY

In January we had heavy rain in Bujumbura and this rain caused the villages of Gatumba and Rukaramu in Commune of Mutimbuzi to be flooded and the residents of these village have lost houses and their belonging.

After the flooding, the Chief of Gatumba village called for national and international NGOs to help the population of Gatumba village in Mutimbuzi in Bujumbura Rural Province. Gatumba is located at 16 km from Bujumbura City and the heavy rains caused much damage throughout the village. Houses were destroyed and people have been evacuated from the vulnerable areas to another place where they are waiting for emergency help.

This time, 500 families have been affected by this flooding; these families have 1,800 people that need emergency help. The staff from CCD Burundi visited the affected population, met with the victims, consulted village leader, the local Government officials and other local actors. The assessment team observed the ground situation and collected information regarding the key problems especially water and sanitation, food, shelter, education and health.

We present these request to you in order to request emergency help from your office so that CCD BURUNDI may meet the urgent needs of the victims of flooding in the Gatumba and Rukaramu in the Mutimbuzi Commune. We thank you for any support that you are going to send. May God bless you all.
